Dr. Ravindra. R. P., Chairperson, Academic Committee, SPPSPTM,
Shirpur is the convener, while Mr. A. B. Page, Assistant Professor, Dept. of
Pharmacology is the co-ordinator for crash course.

The registration for this unique and the first ever course
of this type is through LMS. Assignments are given after each session and participants
scoring more than 50% marks will be given a certificate after the completion
of the course.

Around 90 students of 1st and 2nd year M.Pharm (Pharmaceutics,
Quality Assurance, Pharmacology and Pharm. Chemistry), along with several faculty
members of SPPSPTM, Shirpur campus have enrolled for this programme.

The participants have expressed immense satisfaction for the
highly interesting, relevant course. They were especially impressed by the interactive
and witty sessions conducted by Dr. M.N.Welling.

National Pharmacy Week was celebrated in unique way at SVKM’s Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies’ School of Pharmacy and Technology Management, Shirpur Campus.

Considering the role of Community Pharmacists in health maintenance, the School felicitated community Pharmacists in the region.

Community Pharmacist actual is a bridge between the patient and the physician, said Dr. Deshpande, Associate Dean, School of Pharmacy and Technology Management, Shirpur, in his presidential address. He added that even playing the major role, community Pharmacist is one of the less respected components of Society. He further emphasized to make efforts to change this situation and make a pharmacist the most respectable citizen of Country.

Mr. Kanade, Secretary, Chemist and Druggist Association of Dhule District, accentuated that community Pharmacist must remain in touch with current advancements in this field and appreciated the School’s concept of felicitation of community pharmacists. Dr. Ravindra R. P., revised the roles of community pharmacists and appreciated the services provided by these people to the society. A huge gathering of community pharmacists from Dhule district and surrounding region was present for the programme. Dr. Anil Pethe, convener of the programme along with faculty members of the school felicitated the pharmacists.

Mr. Masoom Reza Khan, (M.Pharm Quality Assurance, First Year Student) have secured Best Oral Presentation Award in Drug Regulatory Affairs section at 63^rd Indian Pharmaceutical Congress, Bengaluru (16 – 18 Dec. 2011). He has presented a paper entitled “Need of Orphan Drug Act to Counter Growing Threats of Rare Diseases in India”. Co-authored & Guided by Dr. Anil M. Summary:

The present study deals with Need of Orphan Drug Act to Counter Growing Threats of Rare Diseases in India. The term “Orphan Drugs” refers to a product that treats a rare disease or conditions. The rare diseases (RD) are a spectrum of diseases (and disorders) with very different etiologies, the common denominator being the frequency of their occurrence in population, with most diseases having no defined diagnostic or treatment protocols available.

According to the India’s population census 2011, the India`s population is above 1.21 billion. World population census states that 17% of world population is Indian. India is second in the world population.

In India there are many common diseases but the occurrences of rare diseases are increasing rapidly with increasing population.

The United States, Japan, Australia and Europe has the Orphan Drug Act, the intent is to stimulate the research, development, and approval of products that treat rare diseases. India has not having such an Orphan Drug Act. Experts estimate suggests that there are over 3.3 crore patients in India suffering from rare diseases. There are about 6000-8000 rare diseases in India. Thus, it is important to establish an Orphan Drug Act in India.

Mr. Amit Page (Asst. Professor, Dept. of Pharmacology) and Mr. Prashant Pingale (Asst. Professor, Dept. of Quality Assurance) SPTM, NMIMS Shirpur participated in a two day international conference organised at ISF College of Pharmacy, Moga (Punjab).  The workshop was jointly organised by National Health Research Institutes (NHRI), Taiwan and ISF College of Pharmacy. This DST sponsored, “Indo-Taiwan International Workshop” was held during 14^th and 15^th December 2011 with theme “Drug Development for Cancer and Infectious Diseases: From Basic to Industry”.

In the poster session, Mr. Amit Page presented the poster on research topic entitled “Evaluation of Anti-Angiogenic Activity of Green Tea and Boswellia Extracts with Kajjali on Chorioallentoic Membrane” guided by Dr. Kala S. Kulkarni and Mr. Prashant presented poster on his research work entitled “To Study the Effect of Herbal Bioenhancers on Release Profile of Anti-Tubercular Agents” guided by Dr. Ravindra R. P., the posters were highly appreciated by the dignitaries present for the conference.

Mrs. Dande presented her research work on “Preclinical Evaluation for better contraceptive: An herbal approach” under the theme of “current Pharmaceutical Aspects of CAM” under the able guidance of Dr.C.G.Bonde & Dr.Nancy Pandita. The presentation was highly appreciated by the jury members and dignitaries from the conference.

Dr. Sateesh Belemkar, delivered speech on “Novel Approach to Explore Antiplatelet activity of Antihypertensive Drugs.” The talk was very much appreciated by fellow scientists.

The congress includes seven symposiums, 20 sessions. As keynote speakers, Dr. Hans-Joachim Böhm, Global Head of Chemistry & Center Manager Pharma Research Basel, Roche, Switzerland; Dr. Stevan W Djuric, Senior Director, Medicinal Chemistry Technologies and Structural Chemistry, Advanced Technology, Global Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Abbott Laboratories, USA; Dr. Dan Marquess, Vice President, Medicinal Chemistry, Theravance Inc, USA and Dr. George Fleet, Professor of Organic Chemistry, Chemistry Research Laboratory, University of Oxford, UK, gave attendees wonderful speeches at Keynote Forum. Over nearly 200 renowned professors, laboratory principals, project leaders and representatives of well-known enterprises attended the ceremony.

It was a unique opportunity to interact with topmost scientists of the world.
